The first same-sexed couple to marry in 2004, Phyllis Lyon (left) and Del Martin [wiki], will be the first to get married in June 16, 2008 - shortly after 5PM. The two will be wed by the Mayor Gavin Newsom. [SF Chronicle article]
The photograph of Lyon and Martin's wedding, at which Newsom officiated at City Hall, has been credited by some as being an iconic image that has influenced how people across the country perceive same-sex marriage. The two also were plaintiffs in the recent case in which the state Supreme Court ruled same-sex marriage legal.
The quote from the article is so very true. Every time I see this I get all teary! It is so beautiful!
Lyon and Martin are said to be the only ones to get married those first moments when it will be legal in San Francisco. The true frenzy will start the 17th, and the county clerks will apparently be open from 8AM-8PM the first weeks.
And for those opposing same-sex marriage, these are now becoming the interest for researchers in search for gender roles - and apparently the gay marriages can help to understand the opposite-sexed couples... [NYT]
