Today it is "fettisdag" (literally: fat Tuesday, but translated to Mardi Gras or Shrove Tuesday). The typical way to celebrate that in Sweden is to eat a semla. Semla is a pastry that is made from
...a cardamom-spiced wheat bun which has its top cut off and insides scooped out and is then filled with a mix of the scooped-out bread crumbs, milk and almond paste, topped with whipped cream. The cut-off top is then put back as a lid and dusted with icing sugar. (from the wiki entry on semla).
But this will not be on the menu of yours truly since I am starting on week two on the South Beach diet. And to say that a semla is a "carb bomb" would be an understatement to say the least!
Tomorrow lent starts with Ash Wednesday.
• Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fast and abstinence from meat. There is a limit of one full meal on those days for all between the ages of 18 and 59 inclusive.
• Days of Abstinence: (all Fridays of Lent) All who have reached their 14th year are bound to abstain totally from meat. (from the MHR bulletin)
