The Castro Street is right now experiencing a face-lift and remake as part of the upcoming filming of the movie about Harvey Milk titled Milk (in production).
Harvey Milk was the first(?) openly gay person to have an elected office as the supervisor of San Francisco. Milk was assassinated in November 1978. [wiki]
